RETROSPECTIVE CHRISTIAN PETZOLD – 30.09 > 11.11
Cinema Galeries, BOZAR and the Goethe-Institute are putting the German director Christian Petzold in the spotlight on the occasion of the release of his most recent film Transit.
On the program: the projection of his most known films Phoenix and Barbara in his presence, a masterclass, the première of Transit and a retrospective of his films. A good occasion to get to know the driving force behind the Berlin school that gave back the glamour to German film.
« Christian Petzold has given a face to the representation of contemporary Germany, namely that of his muse and staractrice, Nina Hoss. Just like Fassbinder gave in the 70s the face of Hanna Schygulla to his country. Since his first films dating from the mid 90s Christian Petzold makes x-rays of the German landscapes. He shows a united and ultra capitalistic Germany, one non-space after another and the difficulty to inhabit these. (…) Yella (2007) takes place in the corridors, lobby’s and meeting rooms of immaculate hotels where commercial financing is negotiated and where the fate of companies is fought. With Barbara (2012) and Phoenix (2014) Christian Petzold has rebuilt the past of Germany. For the first film he shows the last years of the GDR. For the second he shows the direct post-war period in the ruins of Berlin. By providing his female characters with unbridled grandeur and courage, Christian Petzold is looking for the sources of the traumas of his country, more generally of the modern Europe. A Europe that is possessed by the ghosts of the past and where Petzold shows what is unspoken. »
